Rockwall County hits top 5 in growth!

Posted by on Mar 30, 2006 in Rockwall, Rockwall County | 0 comments

Rockwall County has once again claimed a seat amongst the fastest growing U.S. areas, according to Census Bureau statistics released late last week.

Rockwall County again took a fourth seed with a 7.74 percent overall growth rate between 2004 and 2005. Flager, Fla., took the lead with 10.7 percent growth followed by Lyon, Nev., with 9.6 percent and Kendall, Ill., with 9.4 percent.

Rockwall Mayor Bill Cecil said the statistics aren’t a surprise to anyone who has watched Rockwall grow during the last several years.

“The City of Rockwall has been growing an average of 7 to 9 percent since the 1970s,” he said. “What you’re seeing now is the rest of the county growing at the same rate.”

Cecil called for smart growth and continued cooperation between leaders throughout the area.

“We need to make good decisions about land use,” he said. He cited the proposed Presbyterian Hospital as an example of how area cities can balance residential growth with business and service interests.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jim Mellody in Royse City said officials continue to work on land use and comprehensive plans in the county’s eastern quadrant.

“I think the county commissioners and all the city managers and mayors are doing a great job communicating with each other through meetings,” he said. “They’re trying to cut costs to the tax payers through joint projects.”
